Sparing Week

Hello everyone! We just finished our sparring week, we are moving into Rolling now. We would like to discuss with everyone what it means to train during sparring week in our Chang’s Taekwondo Martial Arts.
First of all, what is sparring?
Sparring is the sport, or the ‘game-style’ of Taekwondo. There are two parts of Taekwondo, imagine the red and blue circle in the Korean flag, Red would be the sparring, and Blue would be the Traditional martial arts training. Together it makes up our modern day Taekwondo.
Sparring as a game is incredibly entertaining and fun to participate in! It is absolutely not necessary to expect to get hurt during sparring. We are playing tag, only with our feet. Every time I kick my opponent, I receive points. Every time my opponent kicks me, they receive points. After the match is over, the person with the most points wins the game!
Sparring is still grounded in Martial Arts tradition. We are required to wear our Taekwondo Uniform when we spar. We start by bowing, and end with bowing.. Not only to our opponent, but also to the opposing coach and judges as well. The kicks, punches and blocks performed in a sparring match are very similar to our traditional Taekwondo techniques. Only performed faster and with a more specific goal in mind.
If you are interested in joining our sparring team, we have dedicated sparring classes at each Chang’s Taekwondo location. Simply talk to your Instructor for more details and come join the fun!
We have a new tournament coming on May 19th, 2018. It will be a great chance to experience Taekwondo in sparring/tournament atmosphere.
