Competing in Tournaments
Hello everyone! Chang’s Taekwondo Martial Arts was represented by students from our South Surrey, Cloverdale, Tsawwassen and Aldergrove schools at the 1st Korean Consulate Cup Tournament on May 13th. We had 15 competitors competing in Poomsae, Board Breaking and Sparring. We are proud of all our students and the hard work they put into training for this event. We would like to remind all students that competing is something anyone can do, all you have to do is talk to you Instructor to take the first steps! So you've decided you want to compete in Poomsae. Good choice! Poomsae is the core practicing tool for Taekwondo, and when performed correctly can yield that gold medal! Now as a Chang's Taekwondo student we should know that we are learning traditional taekwondo motions, technique that had been passed down from grand master to master to instructor and now you. These traditional stances are typically wider and more solid. When competing in a tournament, the judges will be looking for a more standardized and rigid approach to evaluate each competitor fairly. Thus stances will be more narrow, and less long. Along with other motion changes that ripple through the federation. If interested in competing in Poomsae, you must talk to your instructor months in advance so we can properly prepare you.So you like to break boards? Great! The first step to participating in Board Breaking is to join the Advanced Kicking Class. The AKC is available at the South Surrey and Cloverdale locations at this time. The class entails physical training, technical training and practicing the advanced kicks that we do not practice as much in regular classes. We go more in-depth and therefore expect more from the students. There are levels ranging from Novice to Expert, and you work your way through all kicks. From here you work your way into the Demonstration Team and attend Birthday parties and other events to gain experience performing in front of an audience! If Sparring is for you, you’re in luck! All Chang’s Taekwondo Martial Arts locations have a sparring class available to students! Sparring class is where we go into more detail about the various sparring drills we do in our regular classes. We go over avoiding, stepping, attacking, countering and blocking (to name a few).. This is the best starting place for your sparring career. Once you find out you love sparring, it is time to talk to your Instructor about joining the Elite Sparring Team. This team is where students come to train for competition. The training is more intense, the drills are more detailed and the students in this class are all striving to be the best they can be so they can fare well at the tournaments! The Elite Team Sparring is only available at the South Surrey location at this time.As you can see there are many ways you can attend our tournaments! Your Instructors suggest you try everything and see which aspect really catches your interest. Once you figure this out, it’s time to train hard! We look forward to seeing you at the upcoming tournaments!**If you would like to receive extra stars:0.Talk to your Instructor about Advanced Kicking Class0.Talk to your Instructor about Sparring Class0.Talk to your Instructor about how to train Competition Style Poomsae
